Nudge Chess keeps normal pieces, legal moves, check, checkmate, castling, and promotion. On any turn, however, the player may use a lit handle around the board to push an eligible rank or file one square instead of moving a single piece.
White pushes files upward from rank 1 or pushes ranks 1 through 4 from either side. Black pushes files downward from rank 8 or pushes ranks 5 through 8 from either side.
The edge square must contain a piece and a completely full eight-square line cannot move. A nudge cannot place the mover's king in check, but it may block a check, carry the king to safety, or push a pawn onto its promotion rank.
Two players can share one screen, with an option to turn the board toward the side to move. Computer play offers Easy, Medium, and Hard levels and lets the player choose a color.
Undo and flip controls make experimentation painless, while the move list distinguishes ordinary chess notation from nudges. Keyboard shortcuts U, F, and Escape cover undo, board flip, and cancel.
From the starting position, the valid a1 file handle moved the white rook and pawn one square upward. The move list recorded a1, the status changed to Black to move, and the game explained that no piece is captured by a nudge.
