In brief
Quick answer
An AI text adventure is a story game with no fixed map. You write an action, and the AI writes what happens next, including the other characters. AI Dungeon's own title calls it a free AI text adventure game. A saved story needs an account. Reading this page does not.
How a session goes
You start with a situation. A locked hotel in 1925, a ship with no memory, a cabin at night. That sentence is the whole character sheet. The story then plays the innkeeper, the suspect, or the thing in the hall.
There is no key list on the official page that we could read, because the game renders after the page loads. Do not expect arrows or a WASD chart here. You type. The story types back. If a choice is offered, you answer in words.
Detective and horror are not separate downloads. They are prompts. "You are a detective in a hotel" is a mystery. "You wake in an abandoned building" is a scare. One game runs both.
What is free, and what needs an account
AI Dungeon is free to start, in the browser or in an app, and the store listing says the free start has no ads. A paid tier exists for longer stories. The price is on AI Dungeon's own page.
Browsing GameWren is not the same as playing. When you follow the button, the official site can ask you to register before it keeps the story. That is the cost of generation, not a download.
What to type on the first line
Write a place, a role, and a problem in one sentence. "You are the night clerk at a hotel where the register is wrong" is enough. A second sentence can name the tone: quiet, funny, or frightening. The AI text adventure uses that opening as the world. It does not need a character sheet, a class, or a map you drew first.
Then write actions, not wishes. "I check the register" gives the story something to answer. "Make it exciting" does not. If the reply wanders, say what is in the room and what you refuse to do. You can start over with a new opening. Nothing you typed on GameWren is saved here, because this page never takes the story.
Treat a good session as a short one. Ten exchanges will tell you whether the voice fits. A long run is for after you have an account on the official game and you want it kept. An AI text adventure that forgets the locked door is a reason to restate the door, not a reason to invent a key this page never listed.
When you want something that is not text
This kind of game will not give you a sprite, a minimap, or a guild. If you want a picture and a wall of finished games, Astrocade is the other door. If you want a short quiz or a remixable story, Sekai is the smaller one. If you want classes and regions, Sorrow Online is a browser RPG, and it is not this.
Kludoku is a fixed detective board, not an AI text adventure, so the small link on this page sends you there only if you want a case with an answer already on the grid. Ashford Online is a 3D RPG, not a story you type. Neither is filed here as this kind of game.
