A bookbinder in a kingdom losing its words

Rex begins in a town where words are fading from every page. Five counties lie outside the gates: meadows and fen, snowfields, lava fields, sinking swamps, and the Unwritten beneath the lakes. Their rare materials return to the bindery as the raw parts of new charters.

The wilds are not presented as a marked checklist. Mazes resist ordinary maps, directions come from people, and creatures have dens, families, and memories of who harmed their kin.

Charters decide what a town becomes

Binding a charter does more than complete a quest. It determines what gets built, where it appears, and which neighboring communities approve. Rex can also make wares, write books, stock shelves, and keep the local shops useful enough for residents to visit.

Every resident has a home, job, routine, and mood. Friendships, arguments, courtship, marriage, children, school, festivals, plays, tavern nights, and mayoral elections continue around the player. Rex can marry, raise a family, and eventually pass the bindery to an heir.

Play directly or watch the kingdom continue

The same world can be viewed as classic 2D pixel art or a small 3D diorama. Keyboard, gamepad, and touch controls are supported, and a watch mode follows weddings, festivals, and raids while adding photographs to an album.

New games can generate a fresh arrangement of counties and residents or use the classic land. Sleep in Rex's bed in any town to save. Saves remain in the current browser, but the game also provides export and import tools for moving them between its official hosts.

Creator's description

Starting a new game moved directly from the title screen into Rex's room on Monday morning. The browser build responded to movement and interaction keys while the clock, inventory shortcuts, map, journal, town view, and watch mode were already available.
